Your Students will LOL with this #SpotlightOnStrategies

In the same way that physical play strengthens bodies, word play develops a child’s mind. To understand humor, a student must learn new things about words or logical relationships, recognize that the meaning of words can be ambiguous, and that words and phrases may sound alike but have very different connotations. In this strategy,  students develop their sense of humor and understanding of a topic by creating a meme using images to help explain a joke or riddle.

This is a great strategy for special populations including special needs students, English Language Learners (ELL), and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Check it out!

How can I use this strategy with my students?

1. Begin by helping students become familiar with a variety of different jokes, riddles, and other appropriate forms of humor by investigating print and electronic resources.

2. Ask students to select one of the jokes or riddles they find – you may wish to have them research jokes about a certain subject area or concept of study.

3. Next, have students search the Discovery Education image collection to locate an image that helps readers better understand their joke. Print a copy of the image and mount it to construction paper.

4. Write the joke on a strip of paper and glue to the top of the image.

5. Write the punch-line on a separate strip of paper and glue to the bottom of the image.

6. Have students share their jokes and discuss why the image helps to explain the joke or riddle.

7. Once students grasp the concept of the formula for the type of joke, have them select another image and write their own jokes.
